1. Pick a present he or she will love

Have a look at your local pet store and see what toys they have that you think your dog will love. From a new chew toy, a Kong toy filled with peanut butter, or even just a new collar. Treat your furry bestie to some much-deserved spoils!

2. Decorate!

Streamers, balloons, and party decor are the aim of the game. Of course, you need to make sure that any streamers and balloons are out of reach for your precious pooch to sink her teeth into. But have a look online or at your local party shop for any dog-themed decor – you will be surprised as to what you come across!

3. Make a cake your dog can eat

There are some awesome recipes out there on how to make a tasty dog birthday cake! So put on your baking apron and get to mixing, making, and baking. If baking is not your thing, then pop into your pet store and see what doggie treats you can pick up from there. It might even be worth asking around if there are any bakers in the area who make treats specifically for dogs.

4. Dress up your dog

From cute little bandanas, jerseys (for winter, of course) or even just a sparkly collar, make sure your dog is dressed for the occasion. That being said, don’t force your precious pooch into wearing anything he doesn’t want to.

5. Don’t forget to feed the humans

Give your friends an incentive to come over and celebrate your dog with you! Make sure you put together some finger food and drinks for your friends to dive into such as chicken wings, pizza rolls, and stuffed mushrooms – and don’t forget about some cocktails too!

6. Do something special just you and your dog

On the day of your dog’s birthday, do something special. Whether you make him breakfast in bed with a special treat or go for a walk together to a new park with new and exciting smells – do something to make your pup feel special.

7. Make some party favours for your guests

Put together some party bags with treats and goodies for your guests to take home to their dogs, including a small toy, a treat, a party hat, and even a treat for a human too! This is a great sentiment and something for your guests to remember your party by.

8. Ensure your pet is covered so that they are always happy and healthy.

One of the best gifts you can give your pet is insuring his or her health with pet insurance, which will give you and your pet the peace of mind you need to enjoy and live life to the fullest. A trip to the vet can set you back anywhere between R500 to R10 000 or more if surgery is required.

Sadly, things do go wrong, and we can’t predict when they do – but we can be prepared.
