How to deal with your fur baby’s Spring allergies

Spring is finally here, and with all the beautiful flowers and new leaves comes a bit of a pollen allergy! And, just like humans, our fur babies are also prone to allergies.

So, what are some signs that your fur child is struggling with allergies? Let’s take a closer sniff:

• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Constantly scratching
• Chewing at their paws
• Eye discharge
• Rubbing their little faces

Now that you know what to look out for when it comes to your fur pup’s allergies, we need to identify ways in which you can deal with them ASAP!

1. Use pet allergy wipes to clean their eyes and paws

   Using a pet allergy wipe to clean their face, eyes, and paws is a great way to help take some of the irritation away. Your pup might be sticking their face into every flower that blooms or rolling around in the grass, which can start causing itching.

   Wipes allow you to control the allergy before it becomes a bigger issue.

   

2. Use an anti-itch spray

   If you see that your doggo is constantly scratching their coat but they don’t have ticks or fleas, then reaching for some anti-itch spray might be the way to go. Not only do these types of sprays assist with the itching, but they improve your pup’s skin condition and help keep their coat soft and shining.

   

   You can also make your very own anti-itch spray at home with Proud Dog Mom’s recipe:

   1. 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
   2. 1/2 cup brewed green tea (cooled)
   3. 1 cup distilled water

   You then apply the spray onto your pup’s clean skin and coat, massage, rinse, and pat dry. Just take note that if your doggo has an open wound the apple cider vinegar would sting and can make things a lot worse. So, if you see any open wounds rather stay clear of this DIY option!

   

3. Speak to your vet for possible medication

   If it seems that your fur baby is in any discomfort regarding their allergies, then it might be time to pack that on-the-go bag for your pup and head out to the vet. Getting medication for the short-term will ensure that your pup will fight off those allergies in no time.

   

4. Ensure that your furry friend eats a diet that contains omega-3 fatty acids

   Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your pup’s food can assist in providing them relief from their itchy skin. There are other benefits to adding omega-3s to your fur baby’s food such as reducing inflammation, boosting their immune system, and boosting their heart and kidney health.

   With this in mind, giving your doggo omega-3s all year round is extremely beneficial — but be more consistent with giving your fur baby these omega’s during Spring to combat those allergies. Your pup will thank you as they can play outside in style with no itchy skin.
